The PSA project includes the construction of facilities to produce 23 million gigajoules of gas per year, which will feed the Temane Thermal Power Plant (CTT) to generate 450 MW of electricity and surplus gas for export. It will also include a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) facility that will produce 30,000 tonnes per year, meeting 75% of Mozambique’s demand for cooking gas, as well as light oil for export. The substation package measures 45m by 22m and includes a medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) switchboard, a battery room, a local equipment room and a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
Bernard highlighted how the choice of electrical rooms overcomes the various challenges of building advanced facilities in Heidelberg, Gauteng. The design also responded to the harsh environmental conditions and other risks at the site.
Working closely with the contractor, WEG Africa and Proconics, they ensured that all client expectations were met and the highest quality of workmanship was delivered, he says.
The success of a project like this also sends a clear message to the market that the necessary industrial expertise and capabilities are here in South Africa. According to him, the experience gained from this project has shown that WEG Africa is well positioned to execute similar projects in the energy sector.
